Lake Pavin: A young volcano

Formed 6,900 years ago, at the same time as the Chaîne des Puys, Lake Pavin is the result of a particularly violent volcanic explosion, traces of which can be found as far as Lake Geneva. This lake, a maar, is a remarkable natural site.

Discover Lac Pavin in the Sancy Massif

A Unique Lake

Located in the heart of the Sancy mountains, Lac Pavin is an almost perfectly circular natural wonder. With a diameter of 700 to 800 meters and a surface area of 44 hectares, this meromictic lake reaches an impressive depth of 92 meters, making it the deepest in Auvergne. Containing approximately 13 million cubic meters of water, it attracts nearly 200,000 visitors each year.

Activities at Lac Pavin

Sustainable Fishing and Rich Wildlife

Lac Pavin is not only deep, but it is also home to a rich fauna of zooplankton and many fish such as trout and Arctic char. This makes it a popular place for sustainable fishing by summer visitors. You can also enjoy a pedal boat ride on the lake for a relaxing experience.

Climbing and Walks

In the immediate vicinity of the lake, adventure seekers can practice rock climbing on the surrounding cliffs. For those who prefer to stay on the ground, a path around the lake offers a walk of about an hour, ideal for discovering the serene landscapes of the Massif du Sancy.

A Fascinating Meromictic Lake

Structure and Safety

Lac Pavin is remarkable for its meromictic structure. Up to a depth of 60 meters, its waters mix freely. However, between 60 and 92 meters, the water remains stagnant, trapped without exchange with the upper layer. This deep zone contains methane, which could potentially escape due to land movements. Fortunately, the lake is regularly monitored for seismic activity, and it remains stable, posing no danger to visitors.

Access and Amenities

A car park is available just 100 metres from the lake, making access easy for visitors. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a local tourist, or a member of the scientific community, Lac Pavin in the Sancy Mountains offers an unforgettable experience.

Come explore this natural gem and enjoy the many activities it offers. For a complete immersion, end your visit with a stay at the charming Chalet Ma Cambuse, where adventure and relaxation meet.
